Algeria has identified three major challenges facing the United Nations in its efforts to halt the Zionist “settler” aggression in Gaza, which is entering its fifth month. Ahmed Attaf, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, addressed the high-level debate of the Security Council and stated that the aggression on Gaza is about to enter its fifth month, with no clear prospects of Israel relenting.

He argued that this situation imposes three main challenges on the international community within the United Nations. The first challenge is ensuring the respect for resolutions, laws, and regulations issued in its name, and not allowing or tolerating serious violations that undermine peaceful and civilized coexistence among its members.

The second challenge lies in not accepting any member to place themselves above all others, benefiting from preferential treatment, exceptions, privileges, and unjustifiable immunities.

Thirdly, it is crucial to subject Israeli settler occupation to international legal controls, putting an end to what many refer to as impunity, lack of accountability, and non-punishment, calling for strict and decisive measures.

Algeria welcomes and highly values initiatives aimed at moving away from preferential treatment, urging Israel to bear its responsibilities. The article also mentions President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s initiative to mobilize legal experts and international human rights organizations to prosecute the Israeli occupation before international bodies to end years of impunity.

In addition, South Africa’s initiative to sue Israel at the International Court of Justice for committing genocide in Gaza, along with the initiatives of Chile and Mexico to notify the International Criminal Court of the various crimes associated with the Israeli aggression on Gaza, were highlighted.

Minister Ahmed Attaf emphasized that these initiatives deserve support and praise as they represent steps in the right direction. He called on international judicial bodies to fulfill their legal responsibilities entirely. Finally, the article noted the Security Council’s role as the primary protector and guarantor of international peace and security, urging it to assume its political and security responsibilities.
