French Delegate Minister for Veterans Affairs Alice Rufo declared in Algiers on Saturday that her talks with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune were “extremely constructive”, signaling a significant diplomatic push to revive bilateral relations between Algeria and France.
Speaking exclusively to dzwatch following her presidential audience, Rufo stated: “The discussions I held with the President were very productive, coming after my visit to Setif yesterday — mandated by President Macron — to honor alongside Algeria the tragic events of May 8, 1945.”
“President Macron has tasked me with conveying his commitment to restoring a relationship built on respect, equality, and mutual trust between our two nations,” she added.
Rufo confirmed that talks covered bilateral security and defense cooperation, migration, counter-narcotics, and regional tensions across the Middle East, the Strait of Hormuz, the Sahel, and the Mediterranean.
Notably, President Tebboune agreed to resume without delay the work of the joint Franco-Algerian History and Memory Commission — a key step toward confronting the colonial past with, in Rufo’s words, “lucidity, courage, and honesty.”
