Iran announced on Saturday its intention to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a move framed as retaliation for recent deadly Israeli attacks in Lebanon. Despite this escalation, diplomatic channels remain open, with talks aimed at a definitive agreement to end the Middle East conflict scheduled to commence in Switzerland on Sunday.
Strait of Hormuz closure threat
The central command of the Iranian army stated that "the Strait of Hormuz will be closed to maritime traffic," characterizing it as a "first measure in response to the violation of commitments by the enemy." The statement further warned of "other measures" if deemed necessary to compel the adversary to adhere to obligations outlined in an Iranian-American memorandum of understanding signed on Wednesday.
In its initial response, the US Central Command (Centcom) for the Middle East affirmed that its forces are maintaining vigilance. According to Centcom, maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz continued without incident on Saturday, with 55 merchant vessels successfully transiting the waterway.
