UNESCO Application Filed for Oran’s Traditional Blouza
The Blouza Oranaise stands as a profound symbol of Algerian identity, particularly within the vibrant city of Oran. More than a traditional garment, it encapsulates the cultural memory of Algerian women, reflecting a rich heritage shaped by Amazigh, Arab, Islamic, and Andalusian influences. Tracing its modern history to 1830, with roots potentially extending to the 16th century, the Blouza Oranaise has evolved significantly. Initially resembling broader gowns, its designs adapted over time while retaining essential elements such as golden thread embroidery and distinctive motifs. Oran's historic districts, including El Derb and El Kamine, were pivotal in its genesis, and today, the New City hosts numerous workshops and fabric stores, bridging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary designs. These ateliers, found along streets like Tahaha Square and Ghaouti Abdelkader, are vital spaces where the expertise of older generations is meticulously passed to young designers.
The creation of a Blouza involves careful selection of fabric, design, and specific embroideries. Typically long, reaching the ankles with a rounded lower section, the garment's material varies by occasion, including embroidered silk, cotton, linen, or lace. Necklines can be square or V-shaped, adorned with embroidery or embellishments, and sleeves differ in length and style. Often cinched at the chest and completed with a distinctive belt, the Oranaise ensemble traditionally comprises three or four key pieces, including the Blouza itself, an inner garment known as Jeltita, and the "Saroual El Arab."
