Regional Energy Provider: Algeria Meets 10% of Tunisia’s Electricity Demand

Electricity purchases, primarily from Algeria, covered 10% of Tunisia's local market needs during the first half of the current year. This contribution highlights Algeria's significant role as a regional energy provider, supporting a neighboring country's energy requirements.
According to a bulletin from Tunisia's Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Mines, national electricity production in Tunisia reached 9550 GWh by the end of June 2026, marking a 5% increase from the same period in the previous year. Production specifically for the local market saw a 4% rise.
Despite these increases in domestic generation, the reliance on external supplies, largely from Algeria, demonstrates the ongoing energy cooperation between the two nations. This partnership ensures stability in energy supply for Tunisia's expanding demand, with state-owned Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz (STEG) maintaining 91% of Tunisia's national electricity production.
