Interior Minister Directs Enhanced Anti-Smuggling Measures

The Algerian government is significantly strengthening its efforts against illegal migration to Europe, responding to the growing proliferation of clandestine networks. New measures and provisions have been implemented following a coordination meeting held on August 16, which was chaired by the Minister of Interior and Transport, Saïd Sayoud. The meeting specifically focused on reviewing the situation concerning irregular migration in the Mediterranean, underscoring Algeria's proactive approach to this complex challenge.

During the session, Minister Sayoud issued a series of instructions and directives aimed at bolstering coordination among relevant services and intensifying efforts to combat the phenomenon, particularly along the coastline during the summer season. These directives are designed to reduce the operations of smuggler networks targeting Europe and to stem various forms of clandestine crossing attempts, with a commitment to continuous monitoring and necessary follow-up actions.

These reinforced efforts have already yielded tangible results on the ground. For instance, on August 12, police services in the wilaya of El-Tarf successfully dismantled a cross-border network specializing in maritime migrant trafficking. Operations led to the seizure of two pleasure boats, a 40-horsepower fishing boat engine, a GPS device, and fuel cans intended for illegal crossings. The very next day, security services in the wilaya of Algiers announced the dismantling of another cross-border network involved in migrant and drug trafficking, as well as money laundering, further demonstrating Algeria's commitment to securing its borders and combating organized crime.
