African Union Peace Mission Under Algerian Leadership Spurs Sudan Talks

The African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC), under the presidency of Algeria, undertook a diplomatic mission to Khartoum, Sudan, from August 16 to 17. The mission's primary objective was to support Sudan in its efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis, achieve lasting peace, foster national reconciliation, and facilitate humanitarian assistance. Algeria's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Mohamed Khaled, presided over the AUPSC and led the delegation, conducting high-level consultations with Sudanese authorities.

During the mission, Ambassador Khaled underscored the Council's dedication to assisting Sudan in restoring security and stability, while affirming the African Union's core principles of respecting state sovereignty, unity, and non-interference in internal affairs. He also noted the resumption of government operations in Khartoum and the preparations for opening an AU office in the capital, aiming to enhance coordination and pave the way for the lifting of Sudan's AU membership suspension. The delegation engaged in a consultative session with representatives of Sudanese political parties and civil society organizations, broadening the scope of discussions.

A significant development following the Algerian-led mission was the announcement by Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris that national political talks would commence "soon." Prime Minister Idris stated that these talks are intended to prepare the country for comprehensive national recovery, full national reconciliation, and an integrated constitutional reconstruction, ultimately leading to free elections. This announcement, made during his meeting with the AUPSC delegation, signals a concrete step towards a political resolution in Sudan, reinforcing the positive impact of the AUPSC's diplomatic efforts under Algerian leadership.
