Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Amar Benjamaa, pleaded for the right of the Western Saharan people to self-determination and independence with “convincing arguments” and historical facts before the UN Decolonization Committee in New York.

In his speech, Benjamaa questioned “the intransigence of the Kingdom of Morocco and its absolute refusal to organize a referendum for the people of Western Sahara, while it falsely sings about economic and social progress in the occupied territories.”

Benjamaa affirmed that Algeria “is not a party to the conflict and that it has no expansionist ambitions, and that its only goal that it is proud of is to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.”

Benjamaa also affirmed that Algeria will continue to stand by the Sahrawi people as it has done with other peoples who were under colonialism around the world.
