Goudjil Reaffirms Algeria’s Support for Sahrawi Struggle

Algiers – President of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Salah Goudjil, reiterated Algeria’s unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s struggle and their rights as enshrined in UN charters and the African Union Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, according to a statement from the council on Sunday.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by Mr. Mohamed Radja Oussehla, Vice President of the Council of the Nation in charge of Foreign Relations, during the opening ceremony of the Summer University for Cadres of the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), Goudjil reaffirmed Algeria’s firm stance. The event, organized by the Algerian National Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People in cooperation with the SADR Embassy in Algeria, is held from July 14 to 23 at the Faculty of Law and Political Science “Mohamed Bougara” at the University of Boumerdes.

Goudjil’s speech reiterated “Algeria’s steadfast and supportive stance for the Sahrawi people’s struggle and their rights as established by international charters and the African Union Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.” He saluted their struggle “against Moroccan colonial arrogance and their heroic resilience against its tyranny and crimes, as well as its deceitful colonial tactics,” the statement added.

He also pointed to the historical inevitability that rejects colonialism, exemplified by the victory of the glorious November Revolution. Goudjil emphasized that “under the guidance and supervision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria, during its term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, has prioritized raising Africa’s voice and has prepared a promising action plan to address historical injustices, particularly ending colonialism. Algeria is committed to this approach and will not waver despite the discouraging international environment and the serious setbacks in human rights in Palestine and Western Sahara.”

The President of the Council of the Nation also highlighted Algeria’s honorable stances on the Sahrawi issue, as expressed by the President of the Republic, reminding that “Algeria will not abandon Western Sahara and will continue its comprehensive reform path to fully assert its sovereignty over its decisions, so as not to compromise its freedom in defending just causes around the world, foremost among them Western Sahara and Palestine,” according to the same statement.

He noted that the presence of Sahrawi academics and cadres in Algeria during its Independence Day celebrations and its recognition of its youth evokes “the participation of Algerian youth and intellectual elite during the revolution and in the reconstruction of independent Algeria. This coincides with the Sahrawi people’s preparation for a new upcoming phase of their great struggle history, reflecting the wisdom of their leadership in equipping and organizing Sahrawi youth to play their role in building their independent state, establishing its democracy, and securing its rightful place as a fully sovereign Arab African state.”

This event serves as an act of solidarity with the just Sahrawi cause and was attended by the President of the Sahrawi National Council, Mr. Hama Salama, along with Algerian national figures, academics, and lecturers from Western Sahara to discuss the latest developments in the occupied Sahrawi territories and explore ways to provide further support to the Sahrawi people, enabling them to achieve their legitimate right to self-determination and independence.
