South African Delegation Prepares Mining Pact with Algeria
Algeria's Minister of Mines and Mining Industry, Mourad Haneefi, recently hosted a high-level ministerial delegation from South Africa's Ministry of Mineral Resources and Petroleum. The meeting, which took place at the Ministry's headquarters, focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and serves as a prelude to the anticipated signing of a cooperation agreement between the two nations in the mining sector. Key attendees included the Secretary of State for Mines, Karima Bekir Tafer, and the South African Ambassador to Algeria, Ndumiso Ndima Nchengwa, who collectively explored prospects for developing the partnership.
Through this forthcoming agreement, Algeria seeks to leverage South Africa's extensive qualifications and expertise. South Africa is recognized for its prominence in mining exploration, deep drilling techniques, sustainable mine exploitation, and the technological processing of mineral ores. The planned cooperation is structured around several core pillars, notably the local valorization of mineral resources. This initiative aims to transform raw materials into value-added products, thereby generating new employment opportunities and bolstering the national industrial fabric, moving beyond the mere export of raw ores.
Further areas of collaboration include the execution of geophysical studies, employing advanced aerial and terrestrial methods for precise mineral exploration and deposit identification. The agreement also provides for the exchange of experts in mining environmental management, ensuring the adoption of international best practices to mitigate environmental impacts and rehabilitate mining sites. Additionally, the partnership will encompass training and human resource development within the mining sector, aiming to enhance the skills of professionals, as well as joint research endeavors focused on developing new techniques for improved practices and innovation in the industry. The South African delegation conducted field visits to various institutions under the Algerian Ministry of Mines and Mining Industry from September 13 to September 17. Following discussions, the South African Ambassador reaffirmed his country's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Algeria in these specified mining areas. The delegation included representatives from Mintek, a leading South African institution in mineral processing, and geological science officials.
In a related development, Minister Haneefi also received a high-level delegation from Angola's Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas. This meeting, the second in a series of discussions, aimed to further enhance bilateral relations within the mining sector and explore mechanisms for technical, institutional, and geological expertise exchange between Algeria and Angola.
