Companies Convene in Algiers for Green Hydrogen Projects

Algerian and German companies are holding a business meeting in Algiers focused on green hydrogen and energy storage technologies. Organized by the Algerian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Algeria), the event seeks to identify new projects and connect stakeholders from both markets concerning technological needs for energy transition. This meeting is part of a broader business trip to Algeria scheduled from September 21 to 25, conducted under Germany's energy export initiative.

The gathering is expected to include delegations from companies, sector institutions, ministries, and professional organizations from both countries. Discussions will aim to foster exchanges and identify partnership opportunities within the new energy economy, particularly in green hydrogen, renewable energies, and energy storage. The German delegation will present an array of technologies and services covering various stages of the value chain, including electrolysis, water treatment, storage, compression, and engineering. A key focus of the proceedings will be the SoutH2 corridor project, which is designed to connect North Africa with the European hydrogen market by transporting renewable hydrogen from Algeria, through Tunisia, Italy, and Austria, to southern Germany.

This meeting follows a political declaration of intent signed in January 2025 by Algeria, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Tunisia, which aims to accelerate the development of the SoutH2 corridor. Both Algeria and Germany emphasized the strategic importance of this corridor in their joint declaration on the bilateral partnership's strategic agenda in 2026, identifying it as a "European energy route." The two nations have also reiterated their commitment to strengthening cooperation in energy, energy transition, infrastructure, and technologies. This dynamic aligns with Algeria's strategy for green hydrogen development and its national renewable energy program, providing opportunities for German companies specializing in equipment, infrastructure, engineering, storage, and Power-to-X solutions within a market anticipating new investments.

The current discussions further illustrate a broadening economic relationship between Algeria and Germany, who established an energy partnership in 2015 to promote dialogue on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and hydrogen. This desire to expand the relationship to energy transition technologies was also highlighted at the Algerian-German Economic Forum held in Berlin on July 17. That event, which took place during President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's official visit to Germany, reportedly gathered over 350 participants and resulted in the signing of 32 agreements across various sectors.
