Prime Minister’s Visit Signals New Algeria-Mali Cooperation Stage
Algeria has reasserted its crucial role as a regional stabilizer in the Sahel, marked by significantly improved diplomatic relations with Mali and, previously, with Niger. These advancements follow an unprecedented period of severed ties lasting over a year, during which the political and security dynamics of the region were altered. The restoration of normal relations between Algiers, Bamako, and Niamey has underscored to major international powers, including Moscow and Washington, that effective management of Sahel crises is unfeasible without close coordination with Algeria. This recognition stems from Algeria's inherent connections across the Sahelian expanse at all levels, coupled with its profound understanding of the region's complex ethnic and tribal characteristics.
Algeria's diplomatic initiatives in the region are built upon a proven track record of mediation and conflict resolution. The nation notably chaired the international mediation group that facilitated the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali. Furthermore, Algeria offered its mediation services in the aftermath of the military coup in Niger two years prior, which resulted in the overthrow of then-President Mohamed Bazoum. These experiences have consistently demonstrated that solely force-based security approaches, or even hybrid models combining security with development and cultural dimensions, are insufficient for effectively addressing terrorism and political instability in the Sahel. A successful model, as advocated by Algeria, necessitates a reciprocal approach that respects state sovereignty and operates on mutually beneficial principles, fostering internal stability and countering extremist groups.
The commitment to a new phase of bilateral cooperation was further solidified by the recent friendship visit of Algerian Prime Minister Seif Ghrib to Mali. This visit was widely interpreted by both local and international media as a powerful indicator of a shared political will to advance dialogue, cooperation, and continuous coordination between the two historically linked neighboring nations. Discussions during the high-level visit concentrated on enhancing collaboration across numerous areas of mutual interest, including security, economic development, investments, energy, and structural projects. The visit also served as a follow-up to the working visit by Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga to Algeria in August, collectively signaling a robust determination to revitalize bilateral ties and bolster regional immunity against external destabilizing influences.
