Attaf, Murwira Discuss Ties, Western Sahara in New York

Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, engaged in discussions with his Zimbabwean counterpart, Aimon Murwira, in New York. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, focused on the current status and future prospects of relations between Algeria and Zimbabwe. Both officials expressed satisfaction with the advanced level of bilateral ties, which are founded on strong historical bonds, consistent solidarity, and a convergence of views on various regional and international issues.

During their talks, Minister Attaf congratulated Zimbabwe on its election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2027-2028 term, affirming Algeria's readiness to share its experience and lessons learned from its own tenure in the same UN body during 2024 and 2025. In response, Zimbabwe's Foreign Minister Murwira commended Algeria's efforts during its Security Council term, particularly in advancing peace and security across Africa. He also underscored his country's appreciation for the ongoing support and solidarity between the two nations, emphasizing Algeria's role as a strategic partner for Zimbabwe.

The discussions further addressed the issue of Western Sahara, with both sides reaffirming their steadfast commitment to achieving a resolution that guarantees the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination. This shared position aligns with the relevant principles and resolutions established by the United Nations and the African Union.
