Sahel Partnerships Enhance Regional Security, Development

Algeria is actively pursuing a strategy to reinforce its strategic depth and influence in the Sahel region, an area deemed vital for its national security. This initiative involves a concerted diplomatic reconquest of the Sahel and the systematic consolidation of partnerships with its immediate neighbors. This effort highlights Algeria's commitment to strengthening regional stability and cooperation.

Key to this strategy is enhanced cooperation with Niger, which Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine has recognized as a "brother and neighbor country." Algeria supports Niger through substantial investments in natural resource exploitation and consistent backing for its defense system. Broader cooperation extends across health, education, energy, water, and agriculture, with significant infrastructure projects like the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) and the trans-Saharan route.

Furthermore, Algeria has successfully re-engaged with Mali, resuming dialogue and re-establishing diplomatic and air relations in July 2026, marking an end to a fifteen-month rupture. This normalization seeks to consolidate a historically strong relationship rooted in shared geography, human ties, and security interests. Similarly, with Burkina Faso, Algeria initiated economic diplomacy in January and February 2026, leading to cooperation agreements in hydrocarbons, mines, and renewable energies, alongside a program to modernize Burkina's energy infrastructure.

These convergent dynamics, including strengthened partnerships with Niamey, renewed dialogue with Bamako, and expanded cooperation with Ouagadougou, provide a comprehensive coherence to Algerian diplomacy in the Sahel. This integrated approach, combining security, natural resources, infrastructure, and sectoral cooperation, enables the region's nations to enhance their strategic autonomy, diversify partnerships, preserve their sovereign choices, and bolster defenses against external interference.
