Algiers – On Sunday evening in Geneva, Ibrahim Bougali, the Speaker of the Algerian People’s National Assembly, met with Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament (Majles), to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Palestine and Lebanon, according to a statement from Algeria’s lower house of parliament.
The meeting began with Ghalibaf congratulating Bougali on the re-election of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for a second term and the success of the presidential elections in Algeria.
During the talks, both leaders addressed the severe humanitarian situation in Palestine and Lebanon due to ongoing Israeli bombardment, as well as the shortage of humanitarian aid. Ghalibaf shared his recent observations from a visit to southern Lebanon, where he witnessed firsthand the dire and catastrophic conditions faced by civilians.
In response, Bougali reaffirmed Algeria’s longstanding support for its “brothers” in Palestine and Lebanon, highlighting the assistance Algeria had provided to Lebanon before the recent Israeli attacks.
Bougali also emphasized the importance of using every international platform and event to advocate for Palestinian rights, reiterating that Palestinian unity is the only path to effectively defending the Palestinian cause.
The discussions further touched on the 35th extraordinary session of the Executive Committee of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, which focused on the Palestinian issue. Bougali noted the committee’s unanimous support for the Palestinian National Council’s emergency agenda and efforts to rally political support within the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to advance this emergency item during the current session.
For his part, the Iranian Speaker underscored the need for Islamic parliaments to exert pressure on the Israeli regime to halt its ongoing crimes against the Palestinian and Lebanese people.
