Lomé – The Algerian national football team secured their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals with a 1-0 victory over Togo on Monday evening. The match, played at the Kégué Stadium in Lomé, was part of the fourth round of Group E qualifiers.
The only goal of the match came in the 18th minute, when defender Ramy Bensebaïni scored from a penalty, giving Algeria the lead early in the first half.
In the same group, Equatorial Guinea defeated Liberia 2-1 in Monrovia on Monday, with goals from Esui (21′) and Hanza (90+4′) for Equatorial Guinea, while Gibson (53′) netted Liberia’s only goal.
With this victory, Algeria has won all four of their matches in the qualifiers, bringing their total points to 12, comfortably securing the top spot in Group E. Equatorial Guinea follows in second place with 7 points, Togo in third with 2 points, and Liberia at the bottom with just 1 point.
The final two rounds of the qualifiers will take place between November 11 and 19, 2024. Algeria will travel to Malabo to face Equatorial Guinea in the fifth round before hosting Liberia in the final match of the qualification stage.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the AFCON finals, which are scheduled to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. However, only one team will qualify from the group that includes the host nation of the tournament.
Algeria Qualifies for AFCON for the 21st Time
Algiers – This victory marks Algeria’s 21st qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations, with the team once again securing their place in the continent’s most prestigious tournament. Algeria has now qualified for eight consecutive AFCON tournaments, starting from the 2013 edition held in South Africa. Notably, Algeria did not qualify for the 2012 edition, which was co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
In the last two AFCON tournaments, Algeria failed to advance past the group stage in Cameroon 2021 (postponed to 2022) and Côte d’Ivoire 2023 (postponed to 2024).
