Algiers, October 27, 2024 – Algerian filmmaker Kamel Rouini has earned the Best Short Film Award for his film “Whispers of Dawn” at the second edition of the Nouakchott International Film Festival, held in Mauritania from October 22 to 26. The announcement was made by the Algerian Center for Cinema Development (CADC).
This poignant film, with a screenplay by the late Mohamed Adlane Bekhouche, was produced by the CADC as part of the 60th anniversary of Algeria’s independence, aiming to shed light on the contribution of children to the Algerian liberation movement and their courageous efforts during the war for independence. The story emphasizes the human dimension of their involvement.
A Story of Friendship, War, and Courage
Spanning 17 minutes, the film follows the daily life of a young boy named Hussein, played by Abdel-Fattah Gouini, during the liberation struggle. The plot revolves around Hussein’s refusal to follow an order from the revolutionaries to kill village dogs, whose barking at night could alert the French occupiers and their collaborators. Determined to protect his pet, Hussein hides his dog on a mountaintop and secretly feeds it, despite his father, a freedom fighter, being unaware of his actions.
The story builds with emotional depth, portraying the boy’s unwavering bond with his dog. During one of his nighttime visits to the mountain hideout, Hussein discovers a hidden French military patrol preparing to raid the village where the resistance fighters are based. Acting swiftly, he alerts the revolutionaries in time, demonstrating not only bravery but also the role of children in supporting the resistance.
This is Kamel Rouini’s debut directorial effort, and he skillfully brings to life the complex emotions of the characters while documenting Algeria’s struggle against French colonialism. Through Hussein’s story, Rouini highlights the significant, yet often overlooked, contribution of children to the Algerian revolution.
