Algiers, October 27, 2024 – The Algerian Press Agency (APS) has announced the launch of the “Ibrahim Dahmani” poll this week to recognize the top Algerian athletes of 2024, a year marked by numerous medals at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games held in Paris this past summer.
This annual tradition, initiated by APS since 1977, offers a platform for evaluating the achievements of Algerian athletes over the course of the year. As part of the poll, APS invites sports sections of various national media outlets to participate and nominate the best athletes, reflecting the country’s sports accomplishments.
Criteria and Categories for Voting
Each media outlet can submit, in ranked order, nominations for:
- Up to three male athletes
- Up to three female athletes
- One athlete with disabilities (male or female)
- One promising athlete (male or female)
These nominations must be based on the athletes’ performance and results during 2024, particularly in prestigious events such as the Olympics, Paralympics, and other international competitions.
To assist media partners, APS’s sports department will provide a reference list of athletes who have secured titles in various Olympic sports throughout the year. However, participating outlets are free to propose other names as long as they adhere to the standards of excellence based on official achievements.
Submission Process and Timeline
Media outlets are required to submit their nominations in an official letter bearing the organization’s stamp. The completed forms must be sent to the following email address (sondageaps2013@gmail.com) no later than 15 days from the announcement of the list of proposed athletes.
The final list of nominees will be announced shortly, marking the continuation of APS’s tradition of honoring the best athletes through this annual poll.
Legacy of the “Ibrahim Dahmani” Award
Since 1987, the APS athlete-of-the-year poll has been named after Ibrahim Dahmani, a respected journalist who served in several key roles at APS. Dahmani began his career in the sports department, later contributing to the cultural section, and eventually became a correspondent at the APS office in Harare, Zimbabwe, before his untimely passing.
