Algiers – Algeria remains steadfast in upholding the principles of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) and ensuring its success as a cornerstone of cooperation, transparency, and development. This was highlighted by Salima Bakhta Mansouri, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for African Affairs and Chairperson of the APRM National Focal Points Committee, during the 38th Ordinary Session of the APRM Contact Points held in Algiers on Thursday.
Addressing the session, Mansouri stated, “Algeria takes pride in being one of the four founding members of this mechanism, which embodies African values of empowerment and collaboration.” She emphasized that Algeria’s contributions to the APRM’s establishment and its objectives reflect a deep conviction that governance is the foundation for sustainable development and regional integration.
The APRM: A Tool for Change
Mansouri underscored that the APRM is more than just a review mechanism; it is a powerful instrument for transformation. “One of its greatest strengths lies in its ability to facilitate the exchange of experiences and best practices among member states,” she noted. By sharing insights, African nations can collectively strengthen governance across the continent and lay a more solid foundation for progress.
Four Strategic Priorities
To advance the APRM’s mission, Mansouri outlined four key priorities:
- Translating Reviews into Tangible Outcomes: Assessments by the APRM must lead to actionable policy changes that directly address the pressing needs of member nations.
- Enhancing Collective Commitment: Active participation by all member states is essential, requiring a shared sense of empowerment and responsibility.
- Mobilizing Resources Effectively: Financial and technical support are critical for enabling the APRM to fulfill its expanding mandate.
- Strengthening Early Warning and Rapid Response Capabilities: By improving its capacity to identify risks and implement effective measures, the APRM can play a pivotal role in ensuring the continent’s stability.
Regional Leaders Reiterate Support
Executive Director of the APRM Continental Secretariat, Ambassador Marie-Antoinette Rose-Quatre, reaffirmed her commitment to promoting governance and transparency across Africa. “My vision is rooted in fostering unity among African peoples through integrity and open dialogue,” she said.
Similarly, Ambassador Inonge Lewanika Mbikusita, Chairperson of the APRM Panel of Eminent Persons, commended President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on his re-election for a second term. She highlighted how his strategic guidance as Chair of the APRM Heads of State and Government Forum has significantly contributed to the mechanism’s enduring success.
Through this session, Algeria has once again demonstrated its unwavering dedication to fostering democratic principles, sound governance, and regional cooperation under the umbrella of the APRM. The nation’s leadership continues to play a pivotal role in shaping Africa’s journey toward sustainable progress.
