Morocco Selectively Accepts International Aid After Earthquake

dzwatch

Morocco has been selective in accepting international aid after a powerful earthquake struck the country on Friday.

The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.5, killed at least 56 people and injured hundreds more. It was the strongest earthquake to hit Morocco in over 120 years.

In the wake of the disaster, offers of help have come in from around the world. However, Morocco has so far only accepted offers from Spain, Qatar, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Moroccan government has said that it wants to maintain control over the relief effort and avoid a chaotic situation with dozens of countries and organizations sending aid.

However, some critics have accused the government of being slow to accept help and of prioritizing political considerations over the needs of the victims.

The earthquake has also highlighted the strained relations between Morocco and Algeria. Algeria, which cut diplomatic ties with Morocco two years ago, has offered to send 80 specialized rescue workers. However, Morocco has not yet responded to this offer.

The Moroccan government has said that it will continue to assess the situation and accept additional offers of aid as needed.
