Syria and Russia Hold Extensive Military Talks in Damascus

Damascus – Syrian Minister of Defense, Mareh Abu Qasra, held discussions today with a high-level Russian military delegation led by Russian Deputy Minister of Defense, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov. The talks focused on strengthening military cooperation and coordination mechanisms between the two nations. The visit is considered one of the largest Russian delegations to arrive in Damascus in recent years.

According to government sources, the Russian delegation comprises approximately 190 individuals from various ministries and agencies, indicating an expansion of cooperation between the two countries after a period of tension.

The two sides reviewed areas of military cooperation and ways to develop coordination in a manner that serves mutual interests and aligns with the policies of the new Syrian government, which has adopted a more open approach to foreign relations. DZWatch understands that these discussions follow the Syrian Defense Minister’s visit to Moscow last October, where he discussed joint military issues and security cooperation with his Russian counterpart.

Russian engagement in Damascus extends beyond military matters. Syrian Minister of Sports, Mohammed Sameh Hamed, also met with his Russian counterpart, Mikhail Degtyarev, to explore future cooperation and exchange expertise in the field of sports.

These visits are viewed as part of a significant shift in Syrian-Russian relations following the change of government in 2024. Russia had previously granted the former leader “humanitarian asylum” and maintained close ties. Since the formation of the new Syrian government and its adoption of an open diplomatic approach, relations between Damascus and Moscow have witnessed a series of high-level visits and contacts.

President Ahmed Al-Sharaa made his first visit to Russia last October since assuming office. This followed the control of Syrian factions over the entire country in December 2024, ending decades of rule. Throughout his quarter-century rule, Moscow was a key supporter.
