The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has strongly condemned the reported attack on a school in northwestern Nigeria, which resulted in the abduction of 25 female students. The organization is urgently calling for the immediate release of the abducted girls.
According to a statement released Tuesday evening, the attack targeted the Government Girls Secondary School in the Maga community of Kebbi State. Tragically, the school’s vice principal was also killed during the assault.
UNICEF emphasized the critical need for the “swift release of the abducted girls,” stressing that students, educational facilities, and staff must be protected from all forms of attack. The organization insists that those responsible for this heinous act must be held accountable under national and international laws.
“No child should ever be at risk while seeking an education,” the agency stated. UNICEF further affirmed its commitment to working with government partners, civil society organizations, and local communities to strengthen child protection systems and ensure safe and inclusive learning environments across the country. This collaborative effort aims to prevent future tragedies and safeguard the well-being of Nigerian students.
DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing situation and provide updates as they become available. The safety and security of children in conflict zones remain a paramount concern, and we join UNICEF in urging immediate action to secure the release of the abducted students and prevent future attacks on educational institutions. The international community must stand united in condemning such acts of violence and ensuring that all children have the right to a safe and secure education.
