Ain Temouchent – Minister of Water Resources, Taha Derval, underscored the importance of maximizing the value of wastewater treatment plants during a visit to Ain Temouchent on Wednesday. He stressed the need to align these facilities with economic development goals, particularly in directing treated water towards agricultural irrigation and industrial applications.
Speaking to local officials and stakeholders, Minister Derval highlighted the potential of treated wastewater as a sustainable resource. He emphasized that properly managed wastewater treatment plants can significantly contribute to water security, particularly in regions facing water scarcity. The minister urged for innovative approaches to optimize the use of treated water, ensuring its safe and efficient application in both agriculture and industry.
“We must view wastewater not as a waste product, but as a valuable resource,” Derval stated. “By investing in and optimizing our treatment facilities, we can unlock significant economic and environmental benefits.”
The minister’s visit to Ain Temouchent included a tour of existing wastewater treatment infrastructure and discussions with local experts on strategies to enhance their performance. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting projects that promote sustainable water management practices and contribute to the diversification of the Algerian economy.
The focus on utilizing treated wastewater aligns with Algeria’s broader efforts to address water challenges and promote sustainable development. The Ministry of Water Resources is actively working on initiatives to improve water infrastructure, promote water conservation, and explore alternative water resources, including desalination and wastewater reuse.
The emphasis on integrating wastewater treatment into the broader economic landscape signals a shift towards a more circular and resource-efficient approach to water management in Algeria. This approach aims to not only address immediate water needs but also to contribute to long-term economic growth and environmental sustainability.
