WHO Seeks $1 Billion to Bridge Funding Gap

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced it requires an additional $1 billion to cover its budget for the 2026-2027 period. This request comes as the organization grapples with the financial repercussions of the United States’ withdrawal from the body earlier this year.

The funding shortfall stems from the decision by the U.S. government, previously the WHO’s largest single donor, to cease its financial contributions. This decision, implemented earlier this year, has significantly impacted the WHO’s operational capacity.

Consequently, the WHO was forced to revise its previously approved budget downwards, from $5.3 billion to $4.2 billion. This reduction necessitates a significant adjustment in the organization’s priorities and resource allocation.

During a briefing to member states, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus acknowledged the challenges the organization is currently facing. “This year has been one of the most difficult in the history of the World Health Organization,” he stated. “We have undergone a difficult but necessary process of prioritization and redirection, resulting in a significant reduction in our workforce.”

The WHO’s appeal for additional funding underscores the critical role it plays in global health security and the challenges it faces in maintaining its operations amidst evolving geopolitical landscapes. The organization continues to urge member states and other stakeholders to support its mission to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable.
