Khartoum, Sudan – The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have reportedly struck a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) convoy in the border region between Sudan, Egypt, and Libya. This comes as fighting intensifies between the two factions in North Kurdufan state amid a worsening humanitarian crisis and regional and international efforts to halt the conflict.
According to a military source, the SAF conducted an airstrike that destroyed over 50 RSF combat vehicles, fuel tankers, and ammunition trucks in the border triangle area. The source indicated that these vehicles were en route from eastern Libya to Sudan.
In the Kurdufan region, clashes have renewed in several areas, particularly near the city of Bara and west of El Obeid in North Kurdufan state. The SAF and allied forces claim to have made battlefield gains, asserting control over the Jebel Abi Sunun and Abi Qaud areas.
The RSF, for their part, stated they had advanced west of El Obeid, specifically in the Jebel Issa and Al-Ayara areas. Fighting in Kurdufan has escalated following the RSF’s capture of El Fasher in Darfur on October 26th, which was accompanied by alleged atrocities against civilians as documented by local and international organizations.
The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in a dire humanitarian situation, with tens of thousands killed and approximately 13 million people displaced.
RSF Welcomes International Efforts
In a separate statement, the RSF expressed its appreciation for international efforts to address the situation in Sudan. The group specifically thanked former U.S. President Donald Trump and other leaders involved in these initiatives.
The RSF statement further asserted that it is fully responsive to these peace initiatives, and that the true obstacle to achieving peace is the group controlling the armed forces decision, which they described as remnants of the former regime and leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood.
