Analyst: Israel Seeks to Redefine Engagement Rules in Lebanon

A military and strategic expert suggests that Israel may have a green light to expand its military operations in Lebanon. This escalation, according to Brigadier General Elias Hanna, aims to pressure the Lebanese state into fulfilling Israeli demands.

Brig. Gen. Hanna’s comments follow a series of Israeli airstrikes targeting areas in the eastern and central sectors of southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley. The strikes hit the heights of Mount Safi, the Sajed area, and the highlands of the Al-Jabour region, south of Lebanon.

In his analysis of the military landscape in Lebanon, Hanna stated that the Israeli operation is gradual, with indicators visible in its intensity, form (evacuation requests followed by bombardment), and scope. He noted the expansion of operations into the Bekaa Valley, a key area for Hezbollah.

He pointed out that the majority of Israeli airstrikes are concentrated in the area south of the Litani River.

According to Brig. Gen. Hanna, “Israel’s primary goal is to paint a specific picture for the next stage and impose new rules of engagement,” after portraying the Lebanese army and state as incapable of implementing UN Resolution 1701 and achieving a ceasefire. He emphasized that the current actions demonstrate Israel’s intent to establish a new paradigm.

The analyst highlighted a discrepancy between Lebanon’s willingness to negotiate and Israel’s response. While Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expresses readiness for negotiations, Israel responds with airstrikes and drone activity.

President Aoun had previously announced Lebanon’s readiness to negotiate with Israel, under UN, US, or joint international auspices, to permanently halt cross-border attacks.

It is important to note that despite the ceasefire agreement that went into effect on November 27, 2024, Israel continues to occupy points within Lebanese territory and conduct extensive attacks on Lebanon.
