Lebanon Files UN Complaint Over Israeli Border Wall Construction

Lebanon has formally lodged a complaint with the United Nations Security Council against Israel, alleging the construction of two walls within Lebanese territory. This action comes amidst escalating tensions, including reports of explosive projectiles landing near a residential area in Houla, Southern Lebanon.

According to Lebanon’s official news agency, the country’s mission to the UN submitted the complaint citing a “new and serious violation of Lebanese sovereignty, adding to a series of numerous violations and ongoing breaches” by Israel. The complaint specifically concerns the construction of two concrete walls, shaped like the letter ‘T’, situated southwest and southeast of the town of Yaroun, within internationally recognized Lebanese borders.

The Lebanese government asserts that the construction of these walls, the presence of which has been documented by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), constitutes an encroachment on Lebanese land and a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006) and the 2024 cessation of hostilities agreement.

In its complaint, Lebanon urges the Security Council and the UN Secretary-General to take immediate action to deter Israel from its violations of Lebanese sovereignty and to compel the removal of the walls. Furthermore, Lebanon demands the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces south of the Blue Line from all areas still occupied within Lebanon, including five key border locations, and calls for an end to the establishment of what Israel terms “buffer zones” inside Lebanese territory.

Lebanon also insists that Israel respect its obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, allowing for the safe return of Lebanese civilians to their border villages. The Lebanese government reiterated its willingness to engage in negotiations with Israel to end the occupation and cease hostilities, reaffirming its commitment to fully implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the cessation of hostilities agreement. This commitment aims to restore Lebanon’s sovereign decision-making power regarding peace and war, consolidate control of weapons within the state, and extend its authority over all its territories exclusively through its own forces.

The complaint also details Lebanon’s ongoing efforts towards a peaceful resolution.
