Amhara Region and Fano Militia Sign Landmark Peace Accord

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – December 4, 2025 – A permanent peace agreement has been signed between the government of the Amhara region of Ethiopia and the Fano militia, a popular Amhara organization. The signing ceremony was attended by Ambassador Salma Melika Hadadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

The agreement follows extensive negotiations between the two parties, facilitated by the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Ambassador Hadadi hailed the accord as a significant step forward for the future stability and prosperity of Ethiopia.

Aregawi Kebede, President of the Amhara Regional State, stated, “Today marks a historic day for peace for the people of our region.” He emphasized the inclusive nature of the agreement, adding, “There are no winners or losers in any conflict. Peace serves everyone, and this agreement will bring great relief to a population yearning for stability.” He also expressed the government’s gratitude to all who responded to the call for peace and participated in establishing lasting harmony.

Masresha Sete, the leader who signed the agreement on behalf of the Fano militia, affirmed that dialogue and negotiation are the only viable solutions to resolving conflict. He emphasized that settling disputes through discussion is a sign of wisdom, not political failure. “This agreement marks a new chapter for the Amhara people,” Sete stated. The agreement is expected to pave the way for the disarmament and demobilization of Fano fighters and the reintegration of the militia into civilian life. The deal also addresses key grievances related to regional autonomy and security concerns that fueled the conflict.

The signing of this peace agreement represents a crucial step towards consolidating peace and stability in the Amhara region and across Ethiopia. It is hoped that this accord will serve as a model for resolving other conflicts in the country through peaceful dialogue and negotiation.
