In a strategic move to enhance maritime operations, Yusuf Sharfa, the Minister of Transport, announced the forthcoming inauguration of a dedicated Port Authority by the end of this year. The announcement came during a press conference held today at the International Exhibition Hall.
Implementing Presidential Directives
Sharfa underscored that the creation of the Port Authority is in alignment with presidential directives and will be legally rooted in maritime law, specifically Article 91. He revealed that a decree would be issued to formalize the Port Authority’s role in managing various aspects of port operations—from the arrival of ships to the unloading or loading of cargo. This new body is expected to have branches across Algerian ports, effectively decentralizing and streamlining port activities.
Multiple Facets to Increase Revenue and Reduce Congestion
The Minister also highlighted several facilitating measures aimed at boosting export-driven revenue and alleviating congestion in ports. “New infrastructural enhancements will enable the faster unloading or loading of ships, cutting down the time to two or three days,” Sharfa said. These operational improvements will expedite the supply chain, allowing for quicker market replenishment.
A Comprehensive Approach for Algerian Ports
The new Port Authority will serve as a unified organization overseeing the management of all Algerian ports. Its responsibilities will range from the arrival of vessels to the eventual unloading or loading of their cargo. The establishment of this Authority signifies a robust attempt by the Algerian government to modernize and optimize port facilities and operations.
The announcement paves the way for Algeria to fortify its maritime capabilities, enhance operational efficiencies, and stimulate economic growth. With the end of the year as the targeted launch date, the Port Authority promises to be a cornerstone in Algeria’s maritime future.
