Algeria Solidifies Its Role as a Reliable Gas Supplier to the Mediterranean Region

Today in the Italian city of Ravenna, Algerian Energy and Mines Minister, Mohamed Arkab, along with his accompanying delegation, participated in the opening session of the Mediterranean Energy Conference and Exhibition.

In a high-profile ministerial roundtable, Arkab articulated the cornerstones of Algeria’s energy policy, focusing primarily on energy security and the country’s transition to renewable forms of energy. He emphasized Algeria’s critical role as a reliable supplier of natural gas to the Mediterranean region, particularly to Italy.

Addressing Climate Change Efforts

Minister Arkab highlighted Algeria’s sustained efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions and methane emissions. He also pointed out Sonatrach’s reforestation plans, asserting the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Navigating the Energy Transition Challenges

The minister further spoke on the challenges of ensuring a successful energy transition, such as investment considerations and technological control. He reiterated the importance of European companies, especially those involved in natural gas and renewable energy sectors, participating in this transition. Arkab stressed the need for advancements in hydrogen technology as well as efforts to reduce the carbon footprint.

Collaborative Talks with Eni

On the sidelines of the conference, Arkab and his delegation held talks with Claudio Descalzi, the Chief Executive Officer of Eni. Discussions revolved around Eni’s present and future activities in Algeria, especially in the realm of hydrocarbon exploration. The talks also explored avenues for strengthening the partnership between Eni and Sonatrach in other areas of mutual interest, such as offshore hydrocarbon exploitation, renewable energies, and hydrogen development, along with reducing emissions.

Claudio Descalzi expressed his significant satisfaction with the quality of the partnership between Eni and Sonatrach, commending their collaborative efforts.

Italian Acknowledgement of Algerian Contributions

The conference also provided an opportunity for the Italian Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Bicchietto Fratin, to express his gratitude. He praised Algeria’s efforts to ensure energy security in the region, particularly in the realm of natural gas supply.

The event served as a platform to reaffirm Algeria’s pivotal role in stabilizing energy supplies in the Mediterranean, attesting to its commitment not just to energy security but also to the fight against climate change.
