Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that significant progress is being made in negotiations aimed at ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He asserted that American efforts are moving steadily towards a cessation of hostilities.
“We’ve accomplished a great deal. We stopped eight wars, something no one has ever done before,” Trump said. “There’s only one war left, and I thought it would be the easiest, the war between Russia and Ukraine. But we are making real progress.”
Trump elaborated on a proposal to establish a free economic zone in the Donbas region, deeming it viable, though he refrained from providing specific details. “I don’t want to go into specifics now; the situation is very complex. But we will succeed, and many want this project to succeed. My only goal is to stop the killing of 25,000 people a month,” he added.
The comments come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the situation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously indicated that Trump’s negotiating team lacked clarity regarding which entity would assume security responsibilities within the proposed free economic zone.
DZWatch has learned that Steve Witkoff, a Trump envoy, is scheduled to meet with President Zelenskyy and a number of European leaders in Berlin this week. The meetings are aimed at accelerating the end of the war and reducing disagreements over the American peace plan. Witkoff will also hold meetings with officials from France, Britain, and Germany in the coming days.
This development signals a potential shift in the dynamics of the conflict, as renewed diplomatic engagement seeks to forge a path towards lasting peace in the region.
