Algeria Aims for Agricultural Revolution with New Production Plan

Algiers, January 20, 2026 – The Algerian government has unveiled an ambitious plan to revolutionize its agricultural sector, aiming to significantly increase grain production and enhance food security. The announcement was made during a seminar dedicated to integrating scientific research into the development of cereal and dry legume sectors.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yassine Oualid, alongside Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamal Baddari, emphasized the strategic goal of boosting yields from the current average of 15 quintals per hectare to a minimum of 30 quintals. Minister Oualid stressed that achieving this target requires a strong collaboration with universities and research institutions to leverage scientific advancements.

The Ministry of Agriculture’s plan includes several key components: introducing new drought-resistant seed varieties, promoting soil analysis and optimized fertilizer use, and reviving crop rotation systems incorporating legumes. Furthermore, the plan focuses on modernizing irrigation by expanding irrigated areas to 500,000 hectares, establishing equipment rental cooperatives, and extending insurance coverage to protect against drought and heat risks.

In a groundbreaking move, the Minister announced the creation of a dedicated agricultural television channel to provide technical guidance to farmers. Innovative financing mechanisms, including venture capital and micro-loans, will be introduced to stimulate agricultural investment and ensure support reaches genuine producers.

A key aspect of this initiative is the protection of Algeria’s national genetic heritage through the activation of a “gene bank.” This bank will serve as a central hub for developing and sustaining national breeds, ensuring their resilience in the face of climate change.

This comprehensive approach signifies Algeria’s commitment to achieving food sovereignty and building a more sustainable and resilient agricultural sector.
