History of Confrontations Between Algeria and Nigeria

The Algerian national team faces Nigeria today, Saturday, at 17:00, in their 22nd official match, which is considered one of the most prominent quarter-final fixtures of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The first meeting between the two teams dates back to 1973 during the African Games in Lagos, which ended in a 2-2 draw. The two sides have previously met in 21 official matches, with the results perfectly balanced at 8 wins for Algeria, 8 for Nigeria, and 5 draws. However, Nigeria holds a slight lead in terms of goal difference, having scored 29 goals compared to Algeria’s 25.

Throughout their history, the Algerian national team has won 5 out of 8 matches played at home, while the “Super Eagles” have won 5 out of 7 matches on their home turf. On neutral ground, the record is balanced with two wins for each team and two draws.

In the Africa Cup of Nations finals, the two teams have met nine times, with Nigeria securing 4 victories compared to 3 for Algeria, while two matches ended in a draw. These matches took place between the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations in Nigeria and the 2019 edition in Egypt, where Algeria claimed their second title.

In addition to official matches, the two teams have played two friendly matches, both won by Algeria. The first was in 2020 (1-0) in Austria, and the second was in 2022 (2-1) in Oran, giving the Algerian team a slight advantage in the overall head-to-head record.
