The Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure announced on Saturday the launch of a maintenance operation for the road and highway network. According to a ministry statement, the operation began on Saturday morning, January 10, 2026, at the exit of the Shaawa tunnel in Khraicia on the capital’s second bypass, following instructions from the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Abdelkader Kallaoui.
The ministry stated that the year 2025 concludes with the sector’s continued commitment to ensuring the quality and safety of the road network through qualitative interventions that resulted in the delivery of several vital projects within the maintenance program. A total of 2,300 kilometers of national and provincial roads benefited from periodic and regular maintenance operations, ensuring their durability and optimal usability.
These efforts were bolstered by the completion of repairs on 28.4 kilometers of deteriorated highway networks across various sections in 10 provinces, aiming to improve the quality of travel and enhance traffic safety for road users. Additionally, a technical expertise study was conducted covering 51 kilometers of highways across the provinces of Algiers, Blida, Boumerdes, and Bouira, allowing for an accurate diagnosis and the identification of future priority intervention areas.
Work is currently continuing on several fronts, with 16.3 kilometers of deteriorated highways being repaired and 1,791 linear meters of expansion joints replaced on various technical structures. This is in addition to the maintenance of 1,800 kilometers of national and provincial roads to maintain the network at the highest levels of service and quality.
The ministry disclosed that 2026 will see the launch of an investment program aimed at modernizing and strengthening the overall road infrastructure and the national highway network. The sector is preparing to launch operations including the reinforcement of 51 kilometers of highways, 1,000 kilometers of national roads, and 100 kilometers of provincial roads. These works will be accompanied by resurfacing covering 600 kilometers of national roads and 500 kilometers of provincial roads.
The maintenance of technical structures remains a top priority, with interventions programmed for 120 structures within the national road network and 60 structures on provincial roads. The 2026 program also includes the systematic removal of 29 accident-prone “black spots,” the repainting of horizontal markings along 31,000 kilometers of the national road network, and the replacement of 2,832 linear meters of expansion joints on various technical structures across the highway network.
