The quarter-final match between the Cameroonian and Moroccan national teams on Friday sparked widespread controversy and sharp criticism directed at Mauritanian referee Dahane Beida and the VAR officials for numerous officiating errors that favored the host nation.
Many analysts pointed out that the refereeing crew appeared biased during the match, citing the failure to award a clear penalty to Cameroon and the lack of VAR intervention. They also noted instances where Cameroonian players were struck with elbows by Moroccan players without any yellow cards being issued.
Among the analysts who criticized the officiating and called for an end to the situation was L’Équipe analyst Grégory Schneider, who stated: “What would be good is to save some time and give the cup directly to Morocco, and stop considering ourselves stupid spectators.”
He added: “We must stop insulting football and the players, because in the end, they are the primary victims of what is happening. What I saw this evening is absolutely unbelievable and cannot be accepted in a match of this level.”
Schneider continued: “A Moroccan defender strikes his opponent directly in the face with his elbow, and the referee stands by and does nothing. Every time a free kick is awarded to Cameroon, we find the Moroccan defender just one meter away to prevent quick play, without any firm intervention from the referee.”
Regarding the denial of a penalty for Cameroon, the analyst said: “Of course, there was a clear penalty for Cameroon that leaves no room for debate, and everything was clearly visible to everyone.”
