Al-Shara Issues Decree Declaring Kurdish a National Language

Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara has issued a decree granting the country’s Kurds national rights and declaring Kurdish a national language, following clashes between the Syrian army and Kurdish forces in the north of the country.

The decree states that Syrian Kurdish citizens are an essential and authentic part of the Syrian people and that the Kurdish language is recognized as a national language. It also grants Syrian citizenship to all residents of Kurdish origin living on Syrian territory and designates Nowruz, celebrated on March 21, as a national holiday.

For the first time since Syria’s independence in 1946, the Kurdish language will be taught in schools, and the Kurdish New Year, Nowruz, will be an official public holiday.

Following the issuance of the decree, the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, announced that Kurdish forces would withdraw on Saturday morning from areas in northern Syria that the Syrian army had previously ordered to be evacuated.

President Ahmed al-Shara signed the special decree to ensure the rights of Kurdish citizens, stating that any harm against them would be considered an offense against the state, and called on them to participate actively in the nation’s reconstruction.
