French Justice Minister Confirms Cooperation with Algeria on Illicit Assets Recovery

French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin has confirmed that he held extensive talks with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, covering a wide range of files — most notably the recovery of assets acquired through illicit means.

Speaking exclusively to dzwatch following his reception by the President, Darmanin revealed that discussions addressed both the repatriation of seized assets and those set for final confiscation, all within the framework of close cooperation with French judicial authorities.

Algeria has submitted nearly one hundred formal requests for the recovery and confiscation of illegally obtained assets — a clear sign of Algiers’ unwavering commitment to fighting corruption at the highest level.

Darmanin, on his second visit of this kind following a previous trip by his colleague, the Minister Delegate to the Armed Forces Minister Alexis Kohler, noted that France’s Financial Prosecutor has been operating with full independence alongside his Algerian counterparts.

The French minister also invited his Algerian counterpart Lotfi Boudjemaa to visit France in early June to deepen the review of these dossiers and prepare them for presentation before French courts. Combating organized crime was also high on the agenda.
