Algeria Accelerates Green Energy Transition with Massive Renewable Projects

Algeria, Africa’s largest hydrocarbon producer, is rapidly accelerating its energy transition by launching major renewable energy and green hydrogen projects, reinforcing its position as a strategic energy partner for Europe.

Despite holding significant oil and gas reserves, Algeria has demonstrated a clear commitment to clean energy, advancing large-scale solar power projects and key renewable investment programs.

Algeria targets 15 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2035, with several projects already connected to the national electricity grid. Two new solar power stations — each with 200 MW capacity — came online in April 2026 in the wilayas of M’ghair and Biskra, with total grid capacity expected to reach 1,400 MW before year’s end.

These developments fall under tenders launched in 2023 covering 3,000 MW of solar capacity, alongside three additional renewable energy concessions, firmly establishing Algeria as a dominant clean energy hub serving both Africa and Europe.
