GIZ Says Tebboune’s Germany Visit Opens New Chapter in Bilateral Cooperation

Elke Förster, Country Director of the German Agency for International Cooperation in Algeria, said President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s official visit to Germany marks a new stage in strengthening bilateral relations and exploring additional areas of cooperation.

Förster explained that the two-day presidential visit reflects renewed momentum between Algeria and Germany. She said it provides an opportunity to continue political dialogue, reaffirm shared priorities and identify new prospects for future partnerships.

According to the GIZ official, cooperation between the two countries has expanded significantly in recent years and is based on mutual trust. Priority areas include the energy transition, economic diversification, vocational training, green hydrogen, climate action and innovation.

She added that new programmes are expected to be launched to support this growing partnership. GIZ, she said, is ready to help implement the priorities defined by both governments in close coordination with Algerian institutions, drawing on its decades of experience in the country.

Förster highlighted Algeria’s strong potential for deeper cooperation, referring to joint initiatives such as the TaqatHy+ project, which supports the development of green hydrogen and renewable energy.

She also praised the results achieved through GIZ-backed programmes. The Green Municipalities project, implemented with the Ministry of the Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, installed solar panels on public buildings and generated savings estimated at 3,614 megawatt-hours of electricity.

Cooperation in vocational education has also helped align qualifications with labour market needs and strengthen the technical skills required for economic diversification.

Förster also mentioned a programme supporting digital and green entrepreneurship, developed with the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-enterprises.

She concluded that renewable energy, vocational training and digital transformation will remain central priorities, with cooperation aimed at promoting inclusive development and creating opportunities for businesses and young Algerians.
