Chinese Firm Contracted for Key Algerian Phosphate Port

China Harbour Engineering Company Limited has been awarded a crucial port development project in Algeria, forming a significant component of the nation's integrated phosphate program. This project centers on Annaba Port, which is strategically positioned as the primary maritime gateway for Algeria's vital phosphate exports. The initiative underscores Algeria's focus on securing control over its key natural resources.
The integrated phosphate project encompasses the entire value chain, from mining and transportation to processing and export. Annaba Port serves as the "last mile" for these operations, making its management critical to the seamless flow of all phosphate products destined for international markets. The long-term design anticipates an annual throughput capacity of approximately 10 million tons, cementing the port's role as a linchpin for Algeria's phosphate industry, a key source for fertilizer production.
The signing ceremony for this project saw the participation of several Algerian ministers, including the Minister of State and Oil and Gas, Mohammed Arkab, alongside the Chinese Ambassador to Algeria, Dong Guangli, highlighting its national importance. The project's framework specifies the Algerian National Oil Company as the owner, with China Harbour Engineering Company responsible for construction, technology, and financing. This collaboration demonstrates a successful partnership that supports Algeria's economic independence and diversifies its international engagements.
