New Measures to Monitor Driving Behavior on Algerian Highways

Algeria is implementing a significant new measure to enhance road safety by activating chronotachographs aboard buses and heavy vehicles. This initiative aims to monitor driver speed and driving time, thereby reinforcing security on Algerian roads. The Minister of Interior, Local Communities, and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, recently chaired a coordination meeting on August 18, 2026, at the Government Palace, focusing on preparations for the device's activation. During this meeting, the Minister issued instructions to accelerate the preparatory phase and finalize all necessary technical and organizational procedures for its operational launch.

These new measures are based on Article 85 of Law 26-09, enacted on May 12, 2026, which pertains to the road code. The primary objective of this legal framework and the subsequent chronotachograph activation is to strengthen overall road safety, significantly reduce instances of speeding, and prevent accidents, particularly those involving heavy vehicles. This proactive approach underscores Algeria's commitment to protecting its citizens and ensuring safer public transportation.

The installation of chronotachographs complements ongoing efforts to improve road safety, as additional controls are already targeting buses and heavy vehicles. These existing checks encompass thorough inspections of vehicle conditions and drug screening for drivers, demonstrating a comprehensive strategy to mitigate road risks. By integrating new technology with established safety protocols, Algeria is taking decisive steps to create a more secure and disciplined driving environment nationwide.
