Sonatrach, Eni Partner on Algerian Emissions Reduction
Eni and Algeria's national oil company, Sonatrach, have formalized an expanded cooperation agreement aimed at reducing emissions across Algeria's oil and gas sector. The new Memorandum of Intent, announced on August 17, 2026, builds upon a partnership initiated in January 2023. This expanded scope now specifically includes initiatives for natural CO2 removal through forestry projects and enhanced monitoring, quantification, and reduction of methane emissions, aligning with international oil and gas standards.
The previous three-year memorandum, established in 2023, laid the groundwork for collaboration focused on reducing gas flaring, valorizing recovered gas, and mitigating emissions from upstream activities in Algeria. Under that agreement, both companies developed a structured program involving joint technical analyses, capacity-building efforts, and field visits. These activities were crucial in identifying various opportunities for environmental improvement, including minimizing fugitive and flaring emissions, boosting energy efficiency, exploring renewable energy projects, and evaluating carbon capture, utilization, and storage prospects.
Significant progress was made under the initial partnership, notably a Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) campaign. This campaign covered approximately 800 kilometers of pipelines and monitored around 7,500 points, resulting in a reported reduction of fugitive emissions. These measurement campaigns are now conducted autonomously and routinely across all joint ventures operated by Eni and Sonatrach. Additionally, a baseline emissions assessment was completed at six upstream assets jointly operated by the two entities within the country.
Eni, an international energy company, has maintained a presence in Algeria since 1981, reporting approximately 132,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day net in the country during 2025. The company describes itself as a leading international energy operator in Algeria and has affirmed its commitment to continued cooperation with Sonatrach in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions nationwide.
