Urgent Water Security Projects in Algiers Secure 200 Billion Centimes Funding

Minister of Water Resources Lounas Bouzegza, accompanied by Wali of Algiers Abdennour Rabehi, initiated a work and inspection visit to the wilaya of Algiers. During this visit, a significant allocation of 200 billion centimes (equivalent to 2 billion Algerian Dinars) was announced. This substantial funding is designated for new urgent projects aimed at enhancing water security, intervention capabilities, and maintenance within the capital. The initiative forms a crucial part of a program designed to strengthen the sector's readiness and improve its capacity to respond effectively to various challenges.

The allocated funds are primarily intended for the acquisition of essential equipment and tools for intervention and maintenance, alongside boosting the capabilities of technical teams. This strategic investment is expected to facilitate the rapid resolution of malfunctions and disruptions, thereby ensuring the uninterrupted provision of public water services across Algiers. Currently, the wilaya manages a daily water production of approximately 1.1 million cubic meters, catering to the needs of over 4.6 million residents, with desalinated seawater constituting 62% of the total supply.

During the visit, Minister Bouzegza expressed satisfaction with the current standard of public water services in Algiers, noting remarkable progress despite climatic changes and increasing demand. He underscored the importance of diversifying water sources, including dams, wells, and continued investment in seawater desalination, which is recognized as a strategic asset for Algeria. The Minister further emphasized the commitment to ensuring regular daily potable water distribution, enhancing storage capacities, adopting smart water management techniques through modern technologies, and systematically renewing water distribution networks to minimize losses and unauthorized connections, all aimed at achieving full production stability and consistent distribution for citizens.
