African Athletics Championship 2024: Algerian Oussama Khennoussi Wins Gold in Discus Throw

Douala (Cameroon) – On Sunday evening, athlete Oussama Khennoussi secured Algeria’s only gold medal on the third day of the African Athletics Championship (men and women), ongoing in Douala, Cameroon (June 21-26).

Khennoussi clinched the gold in discus throw with a championship-winning throw of 63.90 meters, surpassing Namibian Ryan William, who came in second with a throw of 63.87 meters, and South African Victor Hogan, who secured third place with a throw of 56.78 meters. Khennoussi’s performance also set a new national record, raising his aspirations for the upcoming Olympic Games (Paris 2024).

In the same day’s competitions, Algerian runner Abdelmalik Lahoulou won the bronze medal in the 400 meters hurdles.

After the third day of the continental event, the Algerian national athletics team holds third place in the overall standings with a total of six medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze), behind Nigeria in first place with 11 medals (3 gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze) and South Africa in second place with 8 medals (3 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze).

The previous two gold medals for Algeria were won by Zahra Tatari in the hammer throw and Larbi Bouraada in the decathlon, while the silver medal was claimed by Cherif Boudoumi, also in the decathlon. The first bronze medal was earned by Zouina Bouzebra in the hammer throw.

Algeria is participating in the 23rd edition of the African Athletics Championship (June 21-26) with a delegation of 20 athletes (15 men and 5 women).
