National Gas Output Rises 4% in Seven Months
Algeria recorded a 4% increase in natural gas production during the first seven months of 2026, with output reaching 62.621 billion cubic meters. This marks an increase from 60.184 billion cubic meters produced in the corresponding period of 2025. Data from the Joint Organisations Data Initiative (JODI) further indicates that July 2026 production alone rose by 3% year-on-year, totaling 8.612 billion cubic meters, compared to 8.377 billion cubic meters in July 2025.
This increase in production aligns with a significant rise in domestic natural gas consumption, which grew by approximately 7% in the first seven months of 2026, reaching 33.149 billion cubic meters. The electricity generation sector emerged as the primary driver of this demand, accounting for about 69% of total gas consumption in July, with 3.208 billion cubic meters utilized. This heightened consumption coincides with record levels of electricity demand, which approached 21.4 thousand megawatts on July 13 and reached a new peak of 21.828 thousand megawatts on August 19.
Despite a slight decrease in overall gas exports (via pipelines and LNG) in July compared to the previous year, Algeria maintained its presence in international markets. Notably, pipeline gas exports registered growth, rising to 3.184 billion cubic meters in July 2026 from 2.938 billion cubic meters in July 2025. The nation continues to explore new opportunities, with Bangladesh reportedly discussing a short-term contract for 10 annual shipments of Algerian liquefied natural gas. Recent Algerian LNG shipments have also been directed to various European markets, including Turkey, Italy, France, and Spain.
