Chief of Staff Saïd Chengriha Meets with Indian Defense Chief to Strengthen Bilateral Military Cooperation

Algeria’s Chief of Staff of the National People’s Army, General Saïd Chengriha, welcomed the Chief of Defense Staff of the Republic of India, General Anil Chauhan, on Sunday in a high-level meeting aimed at strengthening military ties between Algeria and India. The visit, part of General Chauhan’s official tour to Algeria, included a formal reception and discussions on strategic cooperation, according to a statement from Algeria’s Ministry of National Defense.

The reception ceremony at the National People’s Army headquarters began with honors to the national flag and a military salute by representatives of various branches of the Algerian Armed Forces. Following this, both military leaders held a discussion attended by top officials, including the Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defense, force commanders, and senior officers from both countries, as well as the Indian Ambassador to Algeria and the accompanying delegation.

The meeting addressed current challenges in global security and explored potential avenues for expanded collaboration in areas of mutual interest. Key topics included strengthening Algeria-India military relations, coordinating on shared security priorities, and enhancing defense cooperation to address regional and global security issues.

In his opening remarks, General Chengriha emphasized the historical and supportive relationship between Algeria and India, particularly recalling India’s backing of Algeria’s independence movement. “I take this opportunity to highlight the strong, historical bonds between our nations, with India standing by our side in our quest for self-determination, especially through forums such as the Non-Aligned Movement, championed by Indian Prime Minister Nehru,” Chengriha stated.

This visit follows a recent trip by India’s President, Droupadi Murmu, underscoring the mutual commitment of both countries’ leaders to rejuvenate and expand bilateral relations across multiple fields. The dialogue between the two heads of state established new avenues and strategic frameworks to advance cooperation, utilizing mechanisms like the Joint Cooperation Committee and political consultation initiatives to foster deeper collaboration rooted in historical ties.

Expressing his gratitude for the Indian delegation’s attendance at Algeria’s recent commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the November 1, 1954, Revolution, General Chengriha highlighted the event as symbolic of the friendship between Algeria and India. “Your participation in this important anniversary celebration demonstrates your commitment to strengthening the unique bonds between our two friendly nations,” he said.

In response, General Chauhan conveyed his appreciation for the warm reception, affirming India’s readiness to explore additional areas for bilateral military cooperation.

The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding in military cooperation, solidifying their commitment to deepening defense relations. Concluding the meeting, they exchanged symbolic gifts, and General Chauhan signed the guest book at the headquarters of the National People’s Army, marking a significant milestone in Algeria-India defense diplomacy.
