On Thursday, November 28, 2024, during a public session of the National People’s Assembly, the Minister of Mujahideen and the Families of Martyrs, Mr. Aïd Rabiqa, highlighted the “special care” the Algerian state dedicates to the protection of the country’s historical and cultural heritage, particularly concerning the popular resistance, the national movement, and the glorious War of Liberation.

In his address, Mr. Rabiqa underscored the state’s commitment to preserving the historical and cultural legacy of Algeria’s struggle for independence. He emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader mission to “safeguard the legacy of the martyrs and freedom fighters” and to ensure their historical message is passed on to future generations.

Mr. Rabiqa further noted that this initiative is reflected in the preservation of key national historical sites, with over “1289 martyr cemeteries, 1474 torture centers, 5215 historical monuments, and 3244 memorial sites” recorded across the country. He reaffirmed the state’s dedication to maintaining these landmarks, which are integral to Algeria’s collective memory.

The Minister added that the Ministry of Mujahideen oversees the annual restoration of these historical sites in coordination with various stakeholders, including the revolutionary family, local authorities, and civil society actors. This collaborative effort is designed to ensure the proper maintenance and protection of Algeria’s rich history.

Moreover, Mr. Rabiqa stressed the significant importance of commemorating every historical milestone that Algeria has experienced, revealing that more than “14,000 historical sites, from battles to key events related to the War of Liberation,” have been documented.
