Algeria’s Constitutional Court Chief Defends Full Independence of Electoral Authority

The President of Algeria’s Constitutional Court, Leila Aslaoui, reaffirmed today that the Independent National Electoral Authority (ANIE) operates with complete and total autonomy, stressing that any talk of curtailing its powers is “incorrect.”

Speaking exclusively to dzwatch during a seminar on the powers of public authorities in the electoral process, Aslaoui noted that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had previously emphasized in earlier meetings the importance of preserving ANIE’s full independence without interference.

She clarified that ongoing cooperation between ANIE and the Ministry of Interior concerns only logistical and administrative support — allowing the authority to focus entirely on its core mission of electoral oversight and integrity — and does not in any way diminish its independence.

Aslaoui also called on media outlets and journalists to serve as a bridge between citizens and candidates by providing clear, objective coverage, free from rumors and misinformation. She underscored that Algeria possesses robust oversight and security institutions fully dedicated to guaranteeing free, fair, and transparent elections.
