Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Tuesday the official decision to recognize an independent State of Palestine. This decision coincides with similar moves by Norway and Ireland, which also come into effect simultaneously.

During a press conference in Madrid, Sánchez stated that the decision aligns with UN resolutions and is not directed against any party. He added that Spain’s recognition of an independent State of Palestine is a “historic step towards achieving peace.”

Sánchez emphasized, “Spain will not recognize any changes to the 1967 borders without the agreement of the concerned parties,” reiterating that the only path to peace is the two-state solution.

He also mentioned that Spain will work with Arab countries to hold a peace conference. Sánchez called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the introduction of humanitarian aid, noting that the priority now is to end the unprecedented crisis in Gaza.

It is worth noting that Spain, along with Ireland—both EU members—and Norway had previously announced their official recognition of the State of Palestine. This decision takes effect today and has been met with Palestinian approval.

With these recognitions, the number of countries that have recognized the State of Palestine rises to 147 out of the 193 member states of the United Nations General Assembly.
