Vocational Training Introduces New Agricultural Specialities
Algeria is implementing a national plan to adapt its vocational training to the evolving needs of the agricultural sector. This initiative, set to launch new specialities by October 2026, focuses on modern agricultural machinery, irrigation systems, and technological monitoring. The decision responds to the expansion of Saharan agricultural areas and substantial investments in strategic crops, aiming to cultivate a cadre of skilled technicians capable of operating and maintaining advanced equipment. This strategic approach seeks to curb harvest losses, which can sometimes reach up to 15% due to inadequate technical expertise.
The government, through the vocational training sector, is accelerating the development of future professionals to modernize Algerian agriculture. The new training programs, starting with the next session, will shift the profile of required personnel from simple machine operators to specialists proficient in mechanics and adjustments. These specialities will cover modern agricultural techniques, maintenance of machinery and equipment, irrigation systems, cultivation installations, and monitoring new technologies to improve land utilization and yield. Mohamed Amine Feddal, a teacher-researcher in agricultural machinery, characterized this initiative as strategic and indispensable, aligning with national priorities for technical mastery in the field.
A critical component of this training offer is the deployment of instruction on modern equipment, moving beyond theoretical knowledge to practical application. This is essential as future mechanization incorporates technologies such as GPS guidance, telematics, precision agriculture equipment, and electronic consoles. Vocational training centers are encouraged to acquire recent technical platforms or forge strong partnerships with manufacturers and dealers to ensure young trainees gain experience with equipment currently in use. The ultimate goal is to ensure the rapid integration of these newly qualified individuals into major agricultural projects across the country, thereby supporting the transition to a modern and sovereign agricultural system.
